What does Arts et Métiers do in robotics?

Arts et Métiers is France’s engineering school of the workshop: fourteen campuses, sixteen laboratories, an incubator. We looked for it in every record we hold — papers, projects, patents, startups — and checked what our earlier research said about it against the evidence.

Field of viewThe school, its campuses, laboratories and incubator as the registers and the school’s own pages describe them, and the records that name them: papers by its authors, public projects, patents, and companies linked to it. Claims from our earlier deep research are marked as leads unless a record documents them. How much can this map see?

Arts et Métiers on the regions of mainland France: each campus its own campus page names is a dot, the head office in Paris the gold point; each laboratory is a small ring at its head office, set around its town when several share one. The page also names a campus in Rabat, outside France, which we did not place. The data table lists every town. Source: IGN – ADMIN EXPRESS COG CARTO PE, 2026 edition.Measured

Arts et Métiers trains engineers in thirteen towns across France, from Lille to Aix-en-Provence, and runs sixteen laboratories. It is a network more than a campus: each site has its own specialities and its own partners in industry.

We placed every campus and laboratory from the registers and from the school’s own pages. The map is the school as it describes itself; the next screens are what the records say it does.

The eight largest of the primary topics OpenAlex gives the school’s robotics papers, by papers; a paper counts once, under its one primary topic. 947 papers name the school or one of its laboratories as the institution of an author, 44 more through the affiliation line an author wrote. Our papers follow citations out from robotics, so some sit at its edge: the most cited, from 2008, has 1,153 citations.Measured

In the robotics papers we gathered, 991 carry an Arts et Métiers author, with a peak of 88 in 2017. The largest subjects are Tactile and Sensory Interactions, Prosthetics and Rehabilitation Robotics and Robotics and Sensor-Based Localization — the robotics of the body and of touch more than of factories.

That is the research of mechanics and materials meeting robots: how a hand senses, how a prosthesis moves, how a robot knows where it is. Its most cited paper here is “A review on the Mullins effect”.

Companies tied to the school in our record, by how; a company tied in two ways counts in both bars. The incubator’s own pages: 13 on its list of incubated companies, 10 among its success stories. Public projects: the 42 with the school, a laboratory or AMVALOR among the partners, 31 with the school itself. Left out: 5 organisations the record ties to the school that are not companies, or an address that only shares its name. The school, its former research company or AMVALOR own 27 US patents, none in our robotics set; the school owns 2 worldwide robotics patent families.Measured

The school’s incubator lists 23 companies on its pages, among them ARASTELLE and SYROBO. Wandercraft, the French maker of exoskeletons and now of an industrial humanoid for Renault, is one of its success stories. Beyond the incubator, 105 companies are linked to the school in our record, most through public projects and shared papers — Safran, Schneider Electric and Naval Group among them.

An incubator’s list says a company was hosted, not that the school’s research made it. We found no record of a technology licensed from the school to these companies; that link, if it exists, is not in any source we read.

Each claim our earlier deep research made about Arts et Métiers, checked one by one against the records we hold: documented in a record, partly documented, or not found in any. The startups it tied to the incubator that no record connects to the school: Mip Robotics, Neuronaix, Ganymed Robotics, Box Records (CV Maton) and Keosense. A claim not found is unchecked, not false.Measured

Before collecting any evidence we had asked research assistants what Arts et Métiers does in robotics. Of the 30 claims they made, eleven are documented in a record we hold, five partly, and fourteen not at all — among them startups we cannot connect to the school in any source.

A claim we cannot document is not false; it is unchecked. We keep them as leads, and this note is where they will be tested as the record grows.

  2. The robotics papers of its authors — research.json, from robotics-data’s arts_et_metiers_papers: the robotics papers we gathered with an author filed under the school or a unit under it, or whose own affiliation line names the French school; each by the one primary topic OpenAlex gives it; the most cited quoted from its row.
  3. The companies tied to the school — companies.json, from robotics-data’s arts_et_metiers_companies, arts_et_metiers_projects and arts_et_metiers_patents: every company tied to the school, its laboratories, its incubator or AMVALOR, counted once, by how — its incubator’s own pages, a public project, a shared paper, people who later worked there, a partnership the school’s site states, an address of the school. The institution the school is part of, an organisation named as a university and an address on a street named after the school are left out.
  4. The earlier research, checked — leads.json, from robotics-data’s arts_et_metiers_leads: each claim our earlier deep research made about the school, marked documented, partly documented or not found against the records we hold.
